Memorial Hospital provides chemotherapy to patients undergoing cancer treatment. Specially trained staff works jointly with your oncologist to provide chemotherapy treatment safely and conveniently close to home.
Based on your type of cancer, its stage of advancement, and your overall health, your oncologist will develop a treatment plan specifically for you. Chemotherapy treatments are given daily, weekly, or monthly in scheduled cycles. When developing a treatment plan, it is important that you work with your doctor in weighing the goals and risks of various treatment options to determine which approach is best for you.
Once a chemotherapy regimen has been prescribed by your doctor, Memorial Health’s onsite pharmacy department will prepare your specific chemotherapy agent. The process of administering the drugs can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours depending on what has been prescribed. For longer treatment sessions, Memorial Health encourages you to have a friend or family member with you for support. Under most circumstances, you can leave as soon as your dosage has been administered. Although restrictions and instructions do vary, most chemotherapy patients can generally take any other prescribed medication and eat and drink as normal on the day of treatment.
For most patients blood draws and lab work are done weekly to monitor your body’s reaction to the prescribed chemotherapy regimen and to watch for any possible side effects.
